Paychex uses the entire TICK-stack to monitor their Red Hat OpenShift (PaaS) and Kubernetes (container orchestration) infrastructure and services.

Paychex is a provider of payroll, human resource, and benefits outsourcing solutions for small to medium-sized businesses.

Cassandra Diagnostics by SmartCat is a monitoring and auditing extension for Apache Cassandra implemented as a Java agent. On one side it has connectors for different versions of Cassandra and on the other it has reporters to send measurements to different tools. One of reporters most commonly used is the InfluxDB reporter, which is a natural choice when it comes to storing time-series metrics. InfluxDB's tagging feature gave SmartCat an easy way of differentiating measurements and creating queries. Scalingo needed metrics (CPU, RAM, network consumption) and their customers needed metrics for accurate decision handling. Scalingo is a Platform as a Service with Docker at its heart. They aim to simplify the every day job of web developers regarding hosting, building, deploying and scaling their web applications.

Announcing InfluxDB 1.0 Beta 3 Plus Cluster Rebalancing in InfluxDB Enterprise

We’re excited to announce the immediate availability of the next beta release of InfluxDB Enterprise!

What’s InfluxDB Enterprise? It’s the software that turns any 0.13 instance into a production-ready cluster. Rebalancing, monitoring, user and system management all with a slick UI, on YOUR infrastructure.

New in today’s release:

Cluster Rebalancing

Now enabled in the InfluxDB Enterprise web UI is the ability to rebalance the underlying data of a cluster as you add or delete nodes with zero downtime.

Backup and Restore

Also in this release, the ability to backup and restore an entire cluster including nodes and shards.

Table-based Data Explorer

Within the InfluxDB Enterprise data explorer tab you can now get a graphical experience closer to the functionality of the CLI, for example the ability to query for non-numeric values.

Updates to the TICK-stack

In addition to the InfluxDB Enterprise release, also shipping today is Beta 3 of InfluxDB, Telegraf, and Kapacitor 1.0. You can find the packages for them on our downloads page. We’re closing in on the GA date for these three products, so please report any issues as soon as possible. New in this release:

Telegraf

Support for generic webhooks
FIxes and improvements to the LogParser plugin
Plus 14 features and 18 bug fixes
Please note there are a few breaking changes affecting certain plugins

InfluxDB

1.0 is going to be a big release and so far the changes include:

28 features
Configuration file updates/changes
55 bug fixes

Kapacitor

Added Telegram as an alerting option
Support for creating combinations of points within the same stream. Similar to a JOIN, but instead joining a stream with itself.
Ability to flatten a set of points into a single point, creating dynamically named fields.

NTT Communications ICT Australia is a managed service and colocation provider based in Sydney, Australia. They use influxDB to collect metric data throughout their multi-tenant data centers to maintain visibility across diverse hardware and software deployments. In particular they have used InfluxDB to collect metrics regarding config management deployments, ElasticSearch clusters, basic Linux based OS metrics and source control activities. They also use the metrics for capacity planning and monitoring application queue depths.

HealthQ is currently involved in developing a suite of products for LifeQ. LifeQ uses computational systems biology and continuous body monitoring to create an on-demand record of one's personal physiology and health. This enables specialists and organizations to help humans better understand and manage their health over time. HealthQ needed a datastore that was optimized for time -series data, schema-less and fault tolerant. They have been using InfluxDB for the past year and it has enabled them to be very agile in their development approach.

HealthQ Technologies is a high-tech startup company combining skills from various disciplines to provide solutions in the digital health and wellness space.

Essential Technologies' Sensors Connect platform delivers an air quality index collecting ecosystem. Although still in beta, their first customers have already deployed custom portals using LoRa and LoRaWAN to send measurements from nodes over to gateways and network servers. InfluxDB is used to store persistent data for a predefined period of time.

SensorsConnect.com believes that all of us should be responsible for maintaining air quality. That’s why they’ve introduced SensInAir, a solar powered air quality index sensor. You can install it in your backyard or on your balcony and the SensInAir will report results using LoRaWan technology to a centralized server. The information is then consolidated per individual with city wide results available in an easily digestible formats.

Understanding unexpected fill() behavior

Q: I’m using fill(0) in my query but it doesn’t return any results. Is this the expected behavior?

A: If none of your data fall within your query’s time range, your query will return no results - even if your query includes fill(). This is how fill() currently works but there is an open issue to change that behavior.

For example:

Write one data point:

> INSERT invisible person=7 1467842220000000000
> SELECT * FROM "invisible"
name: invisible
---------------
time                   person
2016-07-06T21:57:00Z   7

Use fill(0) and query a time range that includes the point:

> SELECT mean("person") FROM "invisible" WHERE time >= '2016-07-06T21:57:00Z' AND time <= '2016-07-06T21:59:00Z' GROUP BY time(1m) fill(0)

---------------
time                   mean
2016-07-06T21:57:00Z   7

Use fill(0) and query a time range that doesn’t include the point:

Querying for the latest point in a measurement

Q: I’m trying to find the last point in my measurement. I’ve included the query that I use to do that, but I’m wondering - is there a better way to do this?

> SELECT "dance_id" FROM "ballroom" ORDER BY time DESC LIMIT 1
name: ballroom
--------------
time                   dance_id
2016-07-06T20:26:10Z   103

A: Yes! There’s an InfluxQL function (LAST()) that returns the last point in a measurement:

> SELECT last("dance_id") FROM "ballroom"
