LearnZillion was looking into collecting, storing, and visualizing host and application level metrics from their applications. They liked what the TICK-stack had to offer in meeting those needs: composable systems that are self-contained and easily extendible. Since they use Salt Stack to manage configurations on their instances, they first searched for existing formulas to deploy Telegraf to their instances. Unfortunately, there was no such formula available, so they decided to write one and publish it themselves. The telegraf-formula will install and setup Telegraf on Debian or Red Hat-based systems. The formula gives users an easy way to describe various inputs, outputs, and global_tags via yaml in Salt's pillar.

Siminars was looking for a less complex time-series database. They had a couple of options like Cassandra and OpenTSDB, but InfluxDB stood out for its simplicity. They found the query language quite handy and having not dealt with any column database before, InfluxQL was an easy query language to learn. They use AWS Cloudfront to serve all their static content. However, there was no easy way of querying or visualizing the metrics around the static delivery. Static content delivery provided Siminars with real insights, like how long does it take for a video to be downloaded on a client's web page which we could directly translate into what sort of encoding they needed in that region, for that customer, or for a particular tenant. And of course these heuristics keep changing over time. So, they decided to dump all the cloudfront logs into an InfluxDB server. It started off as an experiment but it went on to gulp hundreds of gigabytes of logs and has been running rather smoothly for over a year now.
Siminars is a content platform which serves all kinds of media like audio, photos, videos etc.

Penn State needed a way to take metrics from Nagios, which they use to monitor nearly everything, and put it into a more useful system. Previously, they were using pnp4nagios, but it made it very difficult to find the data they were looking for, compare data from both of their nagios systems (active/passive pair), and combine the metrics with metrics from other systems. They looked at graphios originally, but found it didn't make efficient use of tags, and the data was laid out rather awkwardly. In the end, they wrote a custom Python script with better logging, simpler configuration, code that was easier to read, and used the influxdb-python module to talk to InfluxDB, obviating the need to handle any of that themselves. There is also a scripted dashboard for displaying all the metrics available for a given host. Eventually, the metrics collected with nagios+fluxios will be displayed alongside metrics from other systems, including Telegraf, which will likely replace their aging Ganglia installation.
