The 5Ws (and 1H) of InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated

Navigate to:

Just like the classic Scott Bakula tv series, the new InfluxDB 3.0 is a quantum leap forward. Of course, for us it’s the evolution of the InfluxDB product suite. InfluxDB 3.0 is the designation for all products powered by the InfluxDB IOx engine. The latest product release in this new suite is InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated.

Let’s jump into the basics for InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated.

WHO: There are several different groups of users that should consider using InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated.

  • Large data sets: If you already work with large time series data sets, or your time series data set is rapidly growing, InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated is likely a cost-effective option.

  • Customization needs: If you want to optimize your database for write or query performance, InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated enables you to do so.

  • Tenancy requirements: If you have regulatory or data residency requirements, InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated offers single tenant infrastructure supported across multiple global regions.

  • Pay for capacity: If you don’t like or don’t want usage-based pricing, InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated uses a capacity-based pricing model.

WHAT: InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated as a fully managed, cloud version of InfluxDB, with some key differences from our Cloud Serverless offering. Cloud Dedicated customers can select from a range of cluster sizes in single tenant cloud infrastructure dedicated to their workloads. Customers can optimize their Cloud Dedicated database performance, prioritizing writes or queries, depending on their needs. Cloud Dedicated also offers features not available in our multi-tenant offering, like private connectivity.

WHEN: InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated is available now. To learn more or to request a Proof of Concept for your use case, contact us.

WHERE: As of today, InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated is available in all AWS regions, except China. We plan to offer Cloud Dedicated on Azure and Google Cloud in the second half of 2023.

WHY: We can break this question down into two different ways. The first is: why should you use InfluxDB Cloud Dedicated, specifically? There’s some cross-pollination here with the WHO section above, but more generally, if you want an enterprise grade solution, but don’t want to manage infrastructure, you need to consider Cloud Dedicated.

The second way to think about this question is why you should lean into the InfluxDB 3.0 product suite. For current users, especially those using OSS 1.x, the InfluxDB 3.0 storage engine will likely run your existing workload faster and cheaper with minimal changes because Cloud Dedicated supports InfluxQL.

More broadly, InfluxDB 3.0 adds new capabilities and functionality so any user can utilize a wider range of time series data types, including metrics, events, and traces. This means that users have access to more and different use cases that, in turn, increases the value of their data.

Leveraging the Apache Arrow ecosystem is a driving factor here as well. Using Apache Parquet as the persistence format means that other ecosystems that use Parquet files natively can read files from InfluxDB directly. Incorporating DataFusion adds SQL support, lowering the barrier for entry for those already familiar with SQL.
